Fern Hill (they/them)
Fern Hill is a second-year student at the University of Victoria where they are majoring in English and Gender Studies. Fern is passionate about education and hopes to become a high school English teacher in their future. They reside in Victoria for most of the year for their schooling but move back to their hometown in Langley with their parents, sister, two dogs and two cats. Fern enjoys numerous hobbies such as reading, writing, making multiple kinds of art and taking care of their many plant babies.

Katie Hildebrandt (she/her)
Katie Hildebrandt is a second-year student at the University of Victoria. She is a devoted, lively student invested in the education system in her hometown of the Esquimalt and Songhees nation. She prides herself on her explanation abilities and empathy towards struggling students and hopes to one day put them to use in a classroom, but this time as a teacher. She has a background in fine arts, having taken music classes for eight years as a percussionist and teaching herself to create since she was a child. Katie is a big fan of science fiction, a lover of Lego, and her cat’s biggest fan. When she’s not the loudest voice in the room, you’ll most likely find her holed up with a sketchbook and paint pens, accompanied by her favourite water bottle, which never leaves her side.

Kyla Mort (she/her)
Kyla Mort is a second-year student at the University of Victoria,  majoring in Indigenous Studies and minoring in Geography. Originally from Kwantlen, Katzie, Matsqui, and Semiahmoo First Nations territory (colonial known as Langley, BC), Kyla has grown up loving the outdoors. You can find her playing competitive soccer, hiking BC’s glorious mountains, or reading on the coastlines of Vancouver Island. She loves to spend quality time with friends and family, and paint, read, and write in her spare time. Kyla has been published in the University of Victoria’s newspaper, the Martlet, and has won an international Creative Writing Scholarship generously provided by the National High School Society. She aspires to become a high school teacher, transferring her love of learning and building meaningful connections into a hopefully reformed BC curriculum.

ILLUSTRATOR

Katie Hildbrandt
Katie Hildebrandt artistically created all the headers and self-portraits presented on this Webzine. The three authors wanted to use creative expression to share their knowledge. The BC curriculum tends to limit students’ creativity within learning environments. Fern, Katie, and Kyla wanted to challenge this perspective and highlight the strengths of employing creativity, self-expression, and visual art in educational subjects that often limit these avenues.
